This breed is highly valued for its protective nature, loyalty, and dominance, making it a preferred choice for experienced handlers.

History

The Bully Kutta originated in the Indian subcontinent, with historical references suggesting its roots in either the Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts of Madras or the Sind region of medieval India. In Thanjavur, the Bully Kutta was a favored pet of ruling families, known for its strength and loyalty. The Mughal emperor Akbar is also said to have owned a Bully Kutta, which he used for hunting wild animals.

While there is no concrete historical proof, some historians and senior breed enthusiasts believe that during the time of Lord Shri Ram, the Gujjar community gifted a Bully Kutta-like dog to Queen Kaikeyi as a token of respect. This suggests that the breed might have had a significant presence in ancient Indian history.

The Bully Kutta gained international recognition when it was showcased at The Second International Dog Show at Islington Agricultural Hall, London, on 28 May 1864, under the category of Indian Mastiff. A year earlier, Edward, the Prince of Wales, and Princess Alexandra entered an Indian Mastiff in the same show alongside a Newfoundland, Russian Tracker, and two Borzois.

By the 1800s, records indicate that royal families and noblemen not only used these dogs for hunting and guarding but also engaged them in dog fights for entertainment. The breed’s immense strength, resilience, and fearlessness made it a prime choice for such blood sports during that era.

Temperament

Bully Kuttas have been described as intelligent, loyal, alert, responsive, energetic, fearless fighters, and naturally aggressive. A well-known veterinarian, Dr. L.N. Gupta from Agra, India, has stated that Bully Kuttas are a dominating breed and should only be handled by experienced and confident owners.

Practically, it has been observed that this breed can adapt and survive well in any climate, making it highly resilient. However, due to its large size and high energy levels, it requires ample space at home for proper movement and activity. Additionally, compared to other breeds, the Bully Kutta requires a significantly higher diet intake to maintain its muscular build and overall health. Proper training, exercise, and a nutritious diet are essential for keeping this breed in top condition.
